The new steel Vanac arrives on October 1st as a permanent reference, carrying a dial scattered with glittering particles and the calibre 8L45, derived from Grand Seiko's 9S65.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

King Seiko launched the Vanac in 1972, a series of angular cases, faceted crystals and vivid dials that stood apart from the restraint of the rest of the catalogue. Seiko revived it in 2025 with five steel references and has since extended it with leather-strap versions and a titanium collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HKF005 keeps the case, bracelet and calibre of the steel models before it, and arrives with a new dial, which is the element that distinguishes the references of the series from one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dial of city lights<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The colour resists easy definition, falling somewhere between black and a blue-tinged grey, and across it Seiko has arranged glittering particles that evoke the lights of Tokyo seen from a distance. It is not aventurine, the shortcut the industry usually reaches for to achieve a comparable effect, but a treatment of Seiko's own, one the brand has not described in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest of the dial follows the language of the series: horizontal grooves, an index ring set into the disc and the oversized V at noon, repeated in the counterweight of the seconds hand. The hands carry a dark coating with Lumibrite inserts, so contrast against the background is slight in full daylight and the glint of the particles comes to the fore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The height of the case<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The case measures 14.3mm tall against a 41mm diameter, a proportion that makes itself felt on the wrist. The other figure tempers it: 45.1mm lug-to-lug, contained enough to be notable, explained by the integrated bracelet, whose first links take over the role of the lugs. The watch covers little wrist and, at the same time, stands above it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That height answers not to water resistance, which stops at 100m, but to the box-shaped sapphire crystal rising above a bezel-less profile, and to the display back that reveals the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The calibre 8L45<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The 8L45 derives from Grand Seiko's 9S65, runs at 28,800vph, carries 35 jewels and delivers 72 hours of power reserve. Seiko rates it at -5 to +10 seconds per day and describes it as the most accurate mechanical movement currently in its production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A comparison with the 6R35 gives that figure scale. The automatic that powers much of mechanical Prospex and the upper Presage range offers 70 hours of reserve with a stated accuracy of -15 to +25 seconds per day, a forty-second spread against the fifteen of the 8L45. The 9S65 from which it descends is rated at -3 to +5. According to Caliber Corner, the 8L45 is assembled at the Shizukuishi studio, the same workshop that produces Grand Seiko's mechanical calibres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the HKF005 receives from that house is the movement. The method that defines it, with certified Zaratsu polishing on every surface, regulation in more positions and the individual inspection of each component, remains in the other catalogue and accounts for much of the price difference between the two families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two watches from the same year<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

That same 1972 was the year Audemars Piguet presented the Royal Oak at Basel. The two watches did not share an approach, since the original Vanac was known for its faceted crystals and the integrated bracelet only reached the series with the 2025 revival, but the coincidence of dates places the angular design of that decade as a conversation with more than one school, and one of them was Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Availability in our region<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

n Spain, Seiko's official product page sets the HKF005 at EUR 3,400, and the brand's own online boutique carries the King Seiko line with free shipping and delivery in 48 to 72 hours, alongside the two stores in Madrid and Barcelona. That site does not accept orders from outside Spain, which closes the route for readers elsewhere in the region. The official UK price is GBP 2,900. The US product page for the HKF005 still carried no listed price in mid-September, though the other steel Vanac references appear at USD 3,300, a figure that gives the order of magnitude without being the price of this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Mexico, Seiko's official store includes no reference with an 8L calibre at all: searches for \"SLA083\" and \"8L45\" in its catalogue return zero results. The series has not entered the official Mexican channel, which leaves importing and the grey market. Between VAT and general duty, the surcharge tends to approach 36 percent of declared value in Mexico, and in Colombia it is 19 percent VAT plus a duty of 10 to 20 percent. These are estimates that should be confirmed with a customs broker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ORELO verdict<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The HKF005 addresses the buyer who was already following the Vanac series and waiting for a dial worth committing to, and the one who wants the 8L45 without paying for the Grand Seiko name on the dial. Among the steel references, this is the one that entrusts its character to light rather than colour.
