It brings something more fundamental: the instruments that determine the winner. Since 1988, the Swiss brand has been the official timekeeper of the world's greatest cycling race.

The Tour de France starts on July 4, 2026. Over the next 21 days, hundreds of cyclists will cross finish lines separated by tenths, hundredths, and in some cases, thousandths of a second. Someone has to measure that. That someone is Tissot.

The relationship between Tissot and the Amaury Sport Organisation—the company that organizes the Tour de France, the Vuelta a España, Paris-Roubaix, and some twenty other races—officially began in 1988. Tissot was named Official Timekeeper of the Tour de France and the Grand Prix des Nations. The first contract lasted until 1992, and even in that first stage, Tissot experienced one of the most tense moments in cycling history: in the 1989 Tour de France, Greg LeMond arrived at the final time trial 50 seconds behind Laurent Fignon. What followed was the greatest comeback in the history of the Grande Boucle. LeMond finished with an 8-second advantage. Without the precision of timekeeping, that victory wouldn't exist—it's just a story without an exact number.

The relationship with A.S.O. was interrupted in 1993 and resumed in 2016. Since then, Tissot has remained a constant presence. And its reach has grown: today it times all the races on the A.S.O. calendar, including the Vuelta a España, the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, and Paris-Nice. Furthermore, in 1995, the brand signed with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to be the Official Timekeeper of the World Championships for Road Cycling, Track Cycling, Mountain Bike, and BMX.

The Operation Behind the Finish Line

What Tissot deploys at each stage of the Tour de France isn't just a technician with a stopwatch. It's two tons of equipment, some twenty field specialists, and a control room called the Chronopole, connected in real time to the finish line.

© Tissot

Each bicycle carries a transponder with a unique signal. When the rider passes an intermediate checkpoint or crosses the finish line, an antenna captures the signal and transmits it to the Chronopole. There, photo-finish cameras record the passage at 10,000 images per second—a resolution of one-tenth of a second, capable of distinguishing distances in millimeters on a horizontal timescale. The system always operates with duplicates: two pieces of equipment, two independent recording sources, to guarantee that no technical failure affects the result.

Results publication time: the first three riders are announced in 5 seconds, the full stage classification in 10 seconds, and the general classification in 15 seconds.

Anyone who thinks timing a cycling race is simply counting the time between start and finish doesn't understand the problem. The Tour de France is simultaneously dozens of different classifications: general, stage, points, mountains, and team. There are time bonuses at the finish, penalties for crashes, and times neutralized due to incidents. Tissot manages this data network in real time and distributes the information to organizers, media outlets, and digital platforms as the race continues.

© Tissot

The 2026 Watch

For the 2026 Tour de France, Tissot presents the PR 100 Tour de France 2026 Special Edition: a 40mm watch with a black PVD-coated steel case and a bezel engraved with the Tour branding. For this audience, the 2026 Tour de France is a race with its own unique characters.

In this context, Tissot is the brand that's present in the race in a way no one can imitate: by being the one that tells the time. It's not a jersey sponsorship. It's not a logo on the finish line screen. It's the brand that appears on the number that defines who won. That's the kind of positioning that can't be bought with an image deal.

The PR 100 Tour de France 2026 is available from July 2026. Tudor sends a team to the Tour—that's bold and deserves respect. But the Tudor rider starts from the same starting line as everyone else and can finish last. Tissot can't. The result Tissot produces is the official result. Without it, the race has no winner.

That's not marketing. It's function.

Having a 38-year relationship with the A.S.O.—interrupted, resumed, extended—and being the only brand featured in every official Tour time trial speaks volumes about how the brand understands the sport: not as a platform for visibility but as an environment where precision can be demonstrated live, with real consequences, in front of cycling's biggest audience.

In watchmaking, there are few better ways to prove what you do than being the arbiter of a race where eight seconds change history.

Since 1988, Tissot has been the Official Timekeeper of the Tour de France.
