For the G-Shock GA-2100 — the CasiOak, for those who know where that octagonal case comes from — that moment arrived this week with the U.S. debut of the Luxe Black collection.

Four versions of the same octagon that designer Koichi Ito conceived while deliberately referencing the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak silhouette — he admitted it in a 2021 interview, describing his goal as "democratizing that design language" — now appear dressed in matte black from head to toe, with vapor-deposition metallic markers and slimmer hands than the base model. Casio calls them the "refined" version of their $99 best-seller. Resin from $145. Steel from $260.

© Casio

What Changed and What Didn't

The Luxe Black's main upgrade is aesthetic, and that's not a criticism: sometimes aesthetics are exactly the point. The all-over matte black finish on the case, bezel, and strap strips away the color contrast that made the original GA-2100 so readable — and so obviously casual. The vapor-deposition metallic markers produce a more sophisticated result than the stamped indices on the base model. The slimmer hands improve the overall look without hurting legibility.

What didn't change: the digital-analog quartz module, with all the features that make a G-Shock what it is — altimeter, compass, and thermometer on models that include them — and the 200m water resistance that makes every variant a tool watch regardless of context.

© Casio

That's the tension in the Luxe Black: Casio is trying to push it toward dinners, business meetings, and situations where a standard G-Shock would feel out of place. Does it work?

The honest answer: it depends on the dress code, and that answer has geography. In cities with more relaxed professional cultures — which includes much of Latin America's urban scene — the Luxe Black works as a secondary watch for someone who has something more formal in the drawer. In genuinely formal contexts — conservative client meetings, black-tie events — the 44.4mm octagon remains too bulky and too digital to pass as a dress watch. That's not a design flaw; it's a concept limitation that darker finishes can't solve.

© Casio

Latin America and Spain Perspective

All four references are available now at casio.com and through authorized dealers across Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Spain — including department stores. The $35 difference isn't really the question — the question is what kind of second watch the reader actually needs. If you already own something formal and want a G-Shock that doesn't look quite so much like one, the Luxe Black earns its place. If the second watch needs to win formal ground on its own terms, the Bambino remains the stronger choice.

© Casio

Casio knows exactly what it has in the GA-2100: one of the most widely copied watch designs of the past decade, one that works because the Royal Oak silhouette functions just as well at $99 as on the wrist of someone paying for the original.
