It is called the Bridge of Sighs. Today, that arch is the first thing you see when you turn the Beaucroft The Arc sideways: the case rises from the bottom lug in a single continuous curve, touches the crown, and sweeps back down.

It is not a decorative detail hidden on the case back. It is the watch's entire silhouette, and it is the reason why a brand that has barely been written about in Spanish deserves fifteen minutes of your attention.

The Arc costs £437 and houses a Japanese movement also found in many other microbrands. By their own account, they didn't set out to start a company so much as to make watches the way they believe they should be made. It is a small brand—free of aggressive advertising—that has grown thanks to reviews and forums rather than marketing campaigns.

The city is not merely a marketing prop. The teardrop shape Beaucroft uses as an index marker at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions is drawn from the arch surrounding the King's College clock. The names of its colorways—Glacial Blue, Temper Red, Sunset Orange—are the result of walking the same streets every morning. And just a few meters from King's Parade stands the Corpus Chronophage: John Taylor's extraordinary—and perhaps the world's strangest—mechanical clock, built as a tribute to the grasshopper escapement used by the horologist John Harrison.

What sets Beaucroft apart from most microbrands is Loupe Works—its in-house UK operation for assembly, prototyping, and component sourcing. It is not a movement factory; the caliber they use is Japanese. However, this means that every watch is assembled, regulated, and tested by people who report directly to the designers. This is also where the hardened case treatment is applied, raising the steel's surface hardness to between 1,200 and 1,300 HV—roughly five to six times that of untreated stainless steel.

The current lineup ranges from £437 to £662 (prices excluding tax): The Arc serves as the entry-level model; the 39.5mm Element is priced at £540 (£607 for the Rebel Black version); the Contour GMT is £662; and the Solaris GMT is £666. Beaucroft is also an officially licensed watchmaker for the University of Cambridge—featuring its Senate line—and a member of 1% for the Planet.

© Beaucroft

Technical Specs

Case

Three-part 316L stainless steel, 38 mm

Thickness

10.3 mm (including crystal)

Lug-to-lug

43.5 mm

Strap width

20 mm

Crystal

Double-domed sapphire, three layers of underside AR coating

Caseback

Flat sapphire display back

Water resistance

100 m

Coating

Hardened to 1,200–1,300 HV

Dial

Fumé with sun-ray finish, four colours: Burnt Orange, Teal, Denim Blue, Olive Green

Hands and markers

Diamond-cut leaf hands and applied markers, both with BGW9 Super-LumiNova

Straps

Delugs: taupe, cream and black Epsom; grey nubuck. The Seeker was a dress watch: 37mm, 18mm lugs, water resistance to 50 meters, fully polished surfaces. The Arc grew to 38mm, 20mm lugs, doubled water resistance to 100 meters, switched to an alternating satin and polished finish, and added hardened coating.

Translated: it stopped being an office watch and became one that you can put in a pool without thinking about it, something closer to an everyday watch. Beaucroft explicitly says he designed it “in response to how owners used the Seeker.” It's a brand phrase, but the numbers back it up.

The extra millimeter also left room for a new polished bezel. In a case that is 10.3mm thick and 43.5mm lug to lug, the curve in the middle of the case is what gives it that distinctive silhouette. The smoked dial does the rest. In afternoon light, the gradient really moves.

© Beaucroft

Where it fails

Beaucroft describes a linear satin on the sides and front of the case. In Worn & Wound's hands-on review from July, Blake Z. Rong reports that this satin is almost imperceptible and that the polished chamfers are so thin that they are barely noticeable. His most useful observation: the lugs do not go down far enough towards the wrist, and in a watch so wide and flat that means that it sticks out on small wrists.

Second criticism, and I agree after reviewing the official images: of the four colors, Burnt Orange and Teal have their own character; Olive Green and Denim Blue are considerably more subtle and resemble each other. If you are going to pay for a smoked sphere, pay for one that stands out.

The movement deserves an honest note. The Miyota 9039 is a Japanese workhorse, undated, reliable and cheap to maintain, present in dozens of microbrands. It is not a purchase argument in itself. What does change the equation is that Beaucroft regulates it to ±10 seconds per day in his own workshop, above the factory standard of the 9039, and displays it under a sapphire caseback with the rotor engraved with the logo pattern.

© Beaucroft

Latin America and Spain Perspective

Here is the letter that no English media writes. Beaucroft ships for free worldwide, but only delivers DDP (taxes and duties settled at checkout) to the United Kingdom, United States, European Union, Canada and Australia. For Spain that means that the price you see in euros when paying is the final price, without surprises at the door.

For the rest of the world, and this includes Mexico, Argentina and Chile, the shipment leaves by FedEx Priority Express from the United Kingdom and is subject to the taxes and import duties that your country applies upon arrival. In Mexico that implies at least 16% VAT plus the tariff that corresponds to the tariff fraction, plus the courier management fee.

Two more specific details. First, the Beaucroft store's country selector shows Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Brazil priced in pounds, not local currency; Colombia and Peru do not appear on that list, which may mean that they did not set up the currency or that they do not ship there. Write to them before attempting the purchase. Second, if you have an address in the United States, Time+Tide is an official distributor and lists the Arc for $575 USD, although at the time of writing this it appears out of stock.

© Beaucroft

It's worth looking twice

Beaucroft summarizes his philosophy with a simple expression: The Long Look. The idea is to create watches that reveal more the more time you spend with them, rather than running out of steam after the first impact. It may sound ambitious, even pretentious, until you compare it to much of today's products, designed to stand out in a photograph or capture attention for a few seconds before losing interest. The Arc isn't a perfect watch, but it doesn't try to be either. Their bet is another: that appreciation grows with use, that the details make sense over time and that the relationship with the watch is built little by little. In a market obsessed with immediate impact, that's a surprisingly rare proposition.

This English microbrand, with six years on the market, turned an arch over the River Cam into the signature feature of its watch case.
