The festival will take place at its three stores on September 19 and 20. The seven watches are being sold online for a single day, and five of them cost less than $2,000.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The online sale lasts only one day. On September 22, the seven watches that Time+Tide presents at FounderFest go on sale for 24 hours, from anywhere in the world. With that window closed, they will be available only at the counters of its three stores: Melbourne, London and New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Australian Blog to Three Stores of Its Own<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Time+Tide began as an online publication in Melbourne. Today it runs three Watch Discovery Studios, venues that work as shop and collector meeting point at once, in Melbourne, London and New York; the New York location opened this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FounderFest represents the next step: the three venues holding the event simultaneously over the weekend of September 19 and 20, with the brands' founders speaking from one stage. Unlike a traditional fair, where the experience revolves around a booth and those who serve you are sales representatives, at FounderFest the main focus is a weekend full of live conversations with founders, performances and meetings between enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York carries the full two-day programme: Awake, Furlan Marri, Beaucroft and Baltic on Saturday; echo\/neutra, Serica and Dennison on Sunday. London and Melbourne run Saturday only, each with its own sessions and live music to close. WatchPro reports that Time+Tide founder Andrew McUtchen secured Taylor Swift's trumpeter for the New York evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets are priced at $20 in New York, \u00a310 in London and $10 Australian in Melbourne. Additionally, the show will be streamed online, making participation much easier. For an event that brings together its seven founders and seven independent brands, that entry is very accessible, and the broadcast makes it easier to feel part of the experience, especially for those who do not reside in those three cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Changes in Each One<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The brief was identical for all seven brands: design a watch around the music that shaped each founder. As a starting point it is looser than it sounds, and the results came out uneven. In four cases it produced decisions that change the product; in the other three, what changes is the dial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baltic<\/strong> made the most substantial move. The catalogue Heures du Monde ships with stone dials, and here the brand debuts the first forged-carbon dial in its history. The material is formed by compressing layers of fibre, so no two pieces come out alike. The 37 mm case and the world-time complication are left untouched, which is the right call: they remain the most interesting thing Baltic offers at this price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beaucroft<\/strong> takes the biggest risk. We reviewed The Arc<\/a> two weeks ago, and what we praised was its restraint, a 38 mm case whose curve does all the work. The Punk deliberately runs the other way: the same case in black PVD, a translucent pink sapphire dial, and the Miyota 90S5 visible from the front. It is the piece with the most character in the group and also the one most likely to tire fastest. And there is a price gap worth facing directly: The Punk costs EUR 645 excluding VAT, while the catalogue Arc lists at GBP 525 with UK VAT already included. The comparison is not entirely fair, given two different currencies and one of them tax-inclusive, but the edition premium is real and it is not small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

echo\/neutra<\/strong> contributes the oddity: 26 mm across and 6.9 mm thick in grade 5 titanium. A Swiss automatic in a case that size is uncommon, and the watch is plainly aimed at anyone who prefers more contained proportions and has grown tired of being offered the same thing. That said, its 30 metres of water resistance is the lowest of the seven by a wide margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennison<\/strong> is the only quartz watch, with two independent Ronda movements displaying two time zones inside an ultra-slim cushion case. Solving the second time zone with two separate motors rather than a complication is an inexpensive answer in the best sense, and it is the only reason a watch like this can be so thin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remaining three, Serica, Furlan Marri and Awake, are dial variations on models already in the catalogue. Very good variations, and that should be said: the Serica's two-tone enamel and Awake's Vietnamese lacquer over silver leaf are crafts almost nobody offers at these prices. But a buyer should go in knowing they are paying for a dial, not a different watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Collection That Would Not Fit an Ordinary Catalogue<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Baltic has sold its Heures du Monde with stone dials from day one. Beaucroft built The Arc from an idea of restraint. Neither brand had a commercial reason to debut a forged-carbon dial, or to coat its case in black and fit it with a pink sapphire crystal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the part of the model worth examining. A publication with a store of its own does not merely resell: it is also able to collaborate on creating a collection. And when it does, it can ask for precisely what a commercial director would rule out as too risky. For an independent brand of twenty people, that difference is what separates an experiment from an idea that stays in the drawer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not an isolated case. Two weeks ago we covered the Doxa Sub Army 200T for Hodinkee<\/a>, 250 pieces commissioned by another publication and cleared in minutes. Two cases in a fortnight describe a trend, and what that trend says about the market is encouraging: there is real appetite for pieces the standard catalogue is not producing, and there are brands willing to build them once someone guarantees they will sell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind all of it sits something harder to build than a shop. The relationship between a watch publication and its readers does not resemble a newspaper's relationship with its audience. A reader who follows a specialist publication for years and walks into its store to buy what that publication chose for its own exclusive collection is not responding to an advertisement: they are trusting a set of judgements they learned to recognise. That trust is the asset that makes FounderFest possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the benefit to the participating brands and to the enthusiast is concrete: seven small brands gain a stage, an audience and a worldwide sales channel that would take them years to assemble alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latin America and Spain Perspective<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The 22 September sale is online and worldwide, which is good news. At the exchange rate on the date of publication, the Beaucroft comes to roughly MXN 13,600, the Serica MXN 27,600, the Baltic MXN 30,500, the echo\/neutra MXN 33,900, the Furlan Marri MXN 46,700 and the Awake MXN 62,050. All of those figures are approximate and before tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On top of that comes whatever your country charges: at least 16% VAT in Mexico, 19% in Colombia, 21% in Spain, plus the tariff on the customs code for watches and the courier's handling fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After those 24 hours, the seven watches remain permanent exclusives of the counters in the three cities where Time+Tide has a presence.
