Enamel fired near 800°C and urushi lacquer, from USD 1,400.

In 1913, the Seikosha workshop could turn out between thirty and fifty Laurels a day, and no more: the movement was far smaller than anything in a pocket watch, and Japanese manufacturing had no practice at that scale yet. It was the first wristwatch made in Japan, with a 900 silver case and a small seconds subdial slightly recessed at six.

One hundred and thirteen years later, with the brand's 145th anniversary as the occasion, Seiko has returned to it with two references that stake everything on the dial. Neither the HCC005 nor the HCC006 is a limited edition: both enter the permanent Presage Classic Series from September, at USD 1,400 and USD 1,650.

Two Crafts, One Case

The case is identical across both, 39.6mm in diameter by 12.4mm thick and 46.8mm lug to lug, with a smooth bezel, bevelled lugs and a flared, knurled crown that echoes the original Laurel's with a more angular line. What changes sits under the crystal.

The HCC005 carries genuine fired enamel rather than a lacquer imitating it: finely ground powder over a copper base, kilned repeatedly at temperatures approaching 800°C, overseen by master enameller Mitsuru Yokosawa with Kazunori Uchiyama, trained under him, as second. Seiko's own product page warns that firing can leave small dimples and tiny dots, and that no two dials come out alike. That is the kind of disclaimer a brand can only afford when the flaw is the proof of the craft.

© Seiko

The HCC006 swaps enamel for black urushi lacquer, built up through successive hand-applied and hand-polished layers under the supervision of lacquer master Isshu Tamura. Here the numerals, indices and hands are gold-coloured over a gold-toned case, a distinctly more ceremonial register than the HCC005, which with its blued hands and red 12 stays on the restrained side.

© Seiko

That red 12 is not a decorative liberty: it was a period fashion carried by some Laurels, as the Seiko Museum Ginza documents. Where the faithfulness breaks is the subdial at six. The 1913 watch had small seconds there; these two carry a 24-hour indicator that, on a dial already showing the hours and with no second time zone to consult, solves very little. It is the most arguable decision in the design, and it stands out because the rest of the exercise is careful.

The 6R5H Does Its Job, Within Its Limits

The movement is Seiko's in-house calibre 6R5H: automatic with manual winding, 24 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), a 72-hour power reserve, hacking seconds and a 24-hour hand. The 6R family sits at the top of Seiko's mechanical catalogue below Grand Seiko, and three days of reserve is a genuine practical argument: a dress watch put away for the weekend is still running on Monday.

The figure worth facing directly is the stated accuracy of -15 to +25 seconds per day. That is a wide window on a USD 1,400 watch, and the comparison makes itself: a COSC-certified chronometer runs between -4 and +6 seconds. The same applies to water resistance, since Seiko's official specification does not state 30 metres but the category "splash resistant". Washing your hands with it on is the end of the list. The 12.4mm thickness is not trivial on a 39.6mm case either: an enamel dial needs depth and the 6R5H is not a thin calibre, so the volume has an explanation, but it wears more present than studio photography suggests.

© Seiko

Technical Specs

References

HCC005 (enamel), HCC006 (urushi)

Case

Stainless steel. That is a meaningful difference from almost everything ORELO covers in this price range, because Seiko does have an official presence in Mexico, Colombia and Spain, so buying with a local warranty is an actual option rather than importing blind. What is not yet confirmed is whether these two references enter the regional assortment, and when, so it is worth asking the boutique before assuming they will.

The reference price is the US one, USD 1,400 for the HCC005 and USD 1,650 for the HCC006. At the exchange rate on the date of publication, that comes to roughly MXN 23,700 and MXN 28,000, before taxes and local distribution margin. Those figures are approximate and serve as a floor: the list price the distributor sets may land higher.

© Seiko

The verdict from ORELO

Reference HCC005 is the standout of the two—not for its design, but for what the craftsmanship of its dial represents. A vitreous enamel dial crafted by hand by a named artisan is simply not available for $1,400 from any Swiss brand; the closest equivalent there costs several times that amount. Everything else is solid, if unremarkable, and the 24-hour sub-dial is a feature the watch didn't need. Those seeking chronometer-grade precision and water resistance have better options at the same price point; those wanting an object handmade by a specific, named artisan have none.

References HCC005 and HCC006 join the Presage permanent collection in September.
