Mido Introduces the Multifort TV Big Date Alebrijes, Its Seventh Día de Muertos Edition

The Mido Multifort TV Big Date Alebrijes is the Swiss brand's first Dia de Muertos edition outside of the Commander collection, featuring a skull surrounded by alebrijes.

Mido has released a watch for Día de Muertos, Mexico's Day of the Dead, every year since 2020. The first edition, the Commander Shade Tradición, was limited to 407 pieces and sold only in Mexico, a country the Swiss brand regards as one of its oldest markets. The next five editions were also based on watches from the Commander collection and, over the years, began to be sold in other countries. The seventh edition, launched on October 1, is the first to be based on a model from a different collection: the Multifort TV Big Date, a watch with a case shaped like a television screen that Mido brought back into its catalogue in 2023.

A calavera and alebrijes in coloured lacquer

The Multifort TV takes its name from the shape of its case, nearly square with rounded corners, like a television screen from the 1970s. Mido first used this shape in 1973. The Día de Muertos edition keeps the stainless steel case of the regular versions of the model, which measures 40mm by 39.2mm and combines brushed and polished surfaces. It is 11.5mm thick and 46.85mm from lug to lug. Its 100 metres of water resistance, backed by a screw-down crown, make the watch suitable for swimming.

This special edition centres on the design of the dial, which is different from that of any other version of the Multifort TV Big Date. On a gradient background that fades from grey to black sits a white calavera, the decorated skull of Day of the Dead imagery, picked out in bright colours and surrounded by alebrijes. Mido applied twelve colours of lacquer to these figures. The background of the dial also carries other animal figures, engraved directly into the surface, which give it texture. Super-LumiNova, the luminous material, is applied in three colours and covers the hour markers, the calavera and the alebrijes, so the artwork can also be seen in the dark. The big date at 12 o'clock has a detail exclusive to this edition: the numeral 1 is shaped like a bone.

Mido presents this dial as the meeting of two worlds, Día de Muertos and alebrijes, which have different origins. The calavera is one of the symbols of the celebration in which Mexico remembers its dead on November 1 and 2. Alebrijes are brightly painted figures of fantastical animals that the artisan Pedro Linares López created in Mexico City in 1936, using paper and cardboard; years later, craftsmen in Oaxaca began carving them in copal wood. Alebrijes are not part of the traditional Day of the Dead ofrenda, the altar families set up for their dead, and their link with the celebration became popular after the 2017 film Coco, which cast them as guides for the departed. Since 2007, the Museo de Arte Popular has also organised a parade of monumental alebrijes in Mexico City, held in late October, a few days before Day of the Dead.

The special edition includes, within the same price, three ways to wear the watch: a brushed steel bracelet with polished centre links, integrated into the case and fitted with a push-button folding clasp; a polished steel Milanese mesh with a sliding clasp; and a textured red rubber strap with a pin buckle. All three have a quick-change system that makes them easy to swap.

The Calibre 80 with big date

The Multifort TV Big Date Alebrijes is fitted with Mido's Calibre 80, an automatic movement based on the ETA C07.651 and the same one the brand uses in the regular versions of the model. Its power reserve of up to 80 hours, a little over three days, means the watch can be left unworn for a whole weekend and still be running on Monday. The movement runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz), lower than the 28,800 vibrations per hour of calibres such as the ETA 2824-2 or the Sellita SW200. At a lower frequency the movement uses less energy, which is one of the reasons it reaches such a long power reserve.

Price and where to buy

The Multifort TV Big Date Alebrijes has been on sale since October 1. Its official price in Mexico is MXN 29,500, according to Mido's website; it costs USD 1,525 in the United States and EUR 1,450 in Spain. In Mexico the watch can be bought from Mido's online store, from the brand's boutique at the Perisur shopping centre in Mexico City and from authorised retailers such as the department stores Liverpool and El Palacio de Hierro. The brand also has points of sale in Spain, Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Peru, which can be found through the store locator on its official website.

An edition centred on the dial

The Multifort TV Big Date Alebrijes matters for the work on its dial, which brings coloured lacquer, engraved figures and luminous material together in a single design, and because it is the first of Mido's Día de Muertos editions that does not belong to the Commander collection. Added to this are a movement with more than three days of power reserve, water resistance sufficient for daily wear and a price that includes the steel bracelet, the Milanese mesh and the rubber strap.

There are also two points to consider. The first five editions of the series were limited to a fixed number of pieces, 777 in the case of the 2024 Commander Círculo de Luz. This one, like the 2025 edition, is a special edition, and Mido has not said how many watches it will make, so it does not offer the certainty of a limited production that some collectors value. The dial, meanwhile, is devoted entirely to Day of the Dead, with the calavera at the centre and the alebrijes around it, and is far more eye-catching than the dials of the regular versions of the model. For those who prefer a discreet watch for daily wear, this edition may not be the best choice; the regular versions of the Multifort TV Big Date have the same case and the same movement, with more sober dials. For those who have followed Mido's Día de Muertos editions since 2020, or who are looking for a watch that celebrates this Mexican tradition, the Alebrijes offers a dial designed specifically for this edition and, for the first time in the series, the television-shaped case of the Multifort TV.
